I write for one of Emerson College’s on-campus publications, Em Mag. It was started fairly recently in 2007, by two Emerson students who wanted a lifestyle magazine that catered exclusively to Emerson students, while headlining with universal topics and trends.
The greatest aspect of Em Magazine is that it’s entirely produced, covered, written and marketed by Emerson students. I am a Features writer (one out of seven) but that’s only the smallest aspect of the publication. The marketing department ensures that enough ads are filled, that the magazine gets enough publicity as it does, and throws the classy party at the end of each semester to celebrate yet another successful printing. Emerson student photographers are routinely sent out with Emerson models and Emerson makeup artists to nab the best photos for the spread. The magazine draws in as many majors, as many students, with as many diverse talents as possible, for its pool of talented staff members.
At any given point during the semester, I might be in the process of revising my second draft and gathering secondary sources, while my roommate down the hall prepares to go out on her next Em Mag shoot. The work leading up to the actual date of publication is equally shared by a variety of talented Emerson students, and standing at the semester’s end celebration, the realization dawns that the magazine has succeeded because of the hard work and effort from each department.
